Landfill gas project in Poland wins first place in JI Photo Contest

A photo showing the inner workings of a landfill gas power project in Poland has taken first place in the Joint Implementation Photo Contest.

The photo, titled: “The JI way to a greener world” was taken by Mr. Mihai Brasoveanu, a Local Project Coordinator for the Danish Energy Agency, Ministry of Climate, Energy and Building. It features the Lubin landfill gas plant in Poland, which converts methane gas, siphoned from the landfill, into electricity via gas-powered generators. This electricity is fed into the grid and replaces power previously generated by coal. The JI track 1 project was registered in 2009.

Both second and third place in the contest were awarded to the same track 1 project – BSH Transport Shift, based in Germany. The project uses trains rather than trucks to transport goods from the BSH docks in Giengen, to the port in Hamburg, thus saving CO2 emissions.

The photo contest was judged by a panel of five people from the public and private sectors.
