The project involves the installation of a secondary catalyst to abate N2O emissions inside the ammonia oxidation reactor at nitric acid production. Due to high temperature and the presence of the secondary catalyst, the N2O previously formed is converted into nitrogen (N2) and oxygen (O2). Prior to the project implementation waste N2O was released into the atmosphere.
The baseline emissions are estimated with an IPCC default emission factor, the selection of which is confirmed by measuring N2O emissions before project implementation. The baseline emissions will be dynamically adjusted from activity levels on an ex-post basis through monitoring the amount of nitric acid production. Project N2O emissions are monitored directly in real time by an Automatic Monitoring System.
While the project considerably reduces N2O emissions, it will neither increase nor decrease direct emissions of other air pollutants. The project does not impact the local communities or access of services in the area, and will not cause any job losses at the plant.
The project is implemented at the nitric acid production plant of S.C. Nitroporos S.R.L. located in the city of Fagaras, County of Brasov, Romania. S.C. Nitroporos S.R.L. is a member of InterAgro Group, which focuses on the production and trade of agricultural products and fertilizers. The JI project is developed and supported by MGM International, an experienced developer of GHG emission reduction projects.
