The project aims at the design, construction and operation of a portfolio of four highly efficient co-generation gas power stations for combined thermal and electric power with a total combined capacity of 29 MWe. Two of the four sites of the project are district heating installations – Toplofikatsia Kazanlak in the town of Kazanlak, central-south Bulgaria and Toplofikatsia Yambol in the town of Yambol, district Varna – north-east Bulgaria.
The two DH installations make a fuel switch from heavy fuel oil to natural gas to provide for heat for the respective town and electricity for the National Electric Company grid.
The two factories - Polimeri of Devnya (chemical factory) and Kostenets HHI (paper products) will be able to produce their own thermal and electric energy with the CHP stations. Kostenets will also replace heavy fuel oil with the use of natural gas. Overall the project improves the air quality in the respective towns and provides for clean and efficient use of energy. Toplofikatsia Kazanlak is in operation since 2008, the other three are under construction.
